Macquarie Two Hundred Year Celebrations
In November and December 1811 Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his wife Elizabeth visited Van Diemen’s Land, the southern most part of the territory under his control as Governor of New South Wales
His visit laid the foundations for the development of Tasmania.
Among the most notable achievements of Macquarie’s visit were
- The establishment of the Mt Nelson Signal Station.
- The establishment of Anglesea Barracks.
- The street plan for central Hobart and the naming of the streets.
- The foundation of New Norfolk and George Town.
- The settlement of the Norfolk Plains.
In November and December 2011 Tasmania commemorates the 200th anniversary of this visit, with celebrations from Adventure Bay to Low Head.
